WITHIN THE ALBUM

What if arriving raised new questions?

Success is the second perspective in the diptych The Rise. Suburban Mirage, Invisible, and Crystal Driveways change the setting without settling the questions of the first chapter. In this fiction, moving into a different position is not enough to know what you want to preserve.

Brother from Another, Bonfire Nights, and Constellation Chronicles open up images of connection and memory. The title Success does not announce the band’s commercial success: it names a theme in the story. Each listener can look for their own definition of arrival.

Begin with Suburban Mirage, then bring this chapter together with Struggle to let the two journeys speak to one another.

Suburban mirage in the hills of Torrance
Cookie-cutter dreams with mortgage abhorrence
HOA meetings where they vote on lawn height
While helicopters circle overhead each night

Manhattan Beach money but we live in Redondo
Pretending we're closer to the lifestyle we follow
Strip mall prophets at the Starbucks counter
Counting down days till the next house offer

Soccer mom convoys in their pristine SUVs
Racing to practice like suburban armies
Dad's commuting two hours to downtown daily
While the kids grow up seeing him only faintly

Gardeners from Guatemala tend our perfect grass
While we debate immigration in our yoga class
The irony's thick like the marine layer fog
That rolls in each morning like clockwork's cog

Beep beep, alarm sets the tone
Beep beep, suburban ringtone
Beep beep, security's song
Nothing ever goes wrong

Living the dream in the valley of promises
Suburban mirage where nothing's ominous
Palm trees and strip malls as far as eyes see
Chasing the coast but stuck in between
White picket fences and invisible walls
Credit card castles that rise before they fall
Suburban mirage on the edge of the pacific
Living so close to the dream but still missing it

405 freeway meditation at rush hour
Podcast wisdom from the self-help tower
Lane changes like life choices, calculated risks
While the radio plays the same old hits

El Segundo aerospace dreams taking flight
But the rent keeps climbing to impossible heights
Tech workers priced out moving to Hawthorne
Where the LAX planes remind you you're still worn

Between what you wanted and what you can afford
House hunting apps become your daily sword
Fighting for square footage in the suburban wars
Where every open house feels like settling for more

Less than you dreamed when you moved to LA
Thinking the coast would wash your debt away
Now you're thirty minutes from the actual beach
But those thirty minutes keep it out of reach

When the marine layer rolls in from the sea
It covers our suburbs in uncertainty
Makes millionaires' mansions look just like our own
In this gray democracy where class lines are blown

Away for a moment in the morning mist
Before the sun burns through and we're back to the list
Of everything we're missing, everything we lack
In these suburban streets with no way back

School zone speed limits on life's ambitions
Teaching kids to dream within safe conditions
PTA meetings about standardized testing
While the real world lessons keep manifesting

In the contrast between our gated community
And the working-class heroes with no immunity
To layoffs and rent hikes and medical bills
That crush suburban dreams beneath corporate mills

But there's beauty in the struggle of the middle class
Barbecue Sundays where the good times last
Little League diamonds where dads live their dreams
Through their children's swings and championship teams

Neighborhood watch where we actually care
About the elderly woman living alone over there
Book clubs and block parties, community gardens
Where suburban souls learn what connection pardons

Maybe the mirage isn't about reaching the coast
Maybe it's about cherishing what matters most
In these cookie-cutter houses with identical lawns
Lives are being lived before they're gone

Suburban mirage or suburban reality?
Depends on your lens and your mentality
These neighborhoods hold stories untold
Of ordinary people doing extraordinary bold

Things like raising families on modest means
And keeping alive their American dreams
Even when the beach house stays out of reach
They're still learning what the coastline can teach

The mirage shimmers in the distance
But home is where the heart finds its resistance
To giving up on dreams
